What is Spray Tanning and how does it work? Is it safe?
Spray tanning at South Coast Glow refers to the custom head to toe application of top of the line products resulting in a natural looking UV free tan.
The tanning products used contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. The tan is not a dye, stain or paint, but a chemical reaction between the DHA and the amino acids in the dead layer on the skin surface. DHA has been approved for cosmetic use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Health Canada and most of the EU member nations. It is considered nontoxic and noncarcinogenic. DHA based Sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association.
Will I turn orange or have streaks?
NO! South Coast Glow provides you with a worry-free custom spray tan. You will have a streak free spray tan that you will not have to rub on or be bothered with. Make sure to exfoliate before your service to avoid any gathering on the dry spots, and make sure you follow the spray tanning tips that will be provided to you prior to your spray tanning session.
Why should I choose your service over a Spray Tan Booth?
We won't ever "bad mouth" a Spray Tan Booth but they are not for everyone. Booths can take some time to perfect, but if you're willing to take the time to master your routine in a booth (risking the first few times of looking a little odd) then a booth is very convenient. Keep in mind however that when tanning in a booth the spray can be uneven. Booths can also leave you blotchy which results in an uneven fade.
Question is, why take the chance on a booth when you know that every part of your body can be detailed by hand, leaving no streaks!
Why not just use a regular tanning bed?
Unlike Tanning beds, spray tans are not harmful for your skin. Plus you walk away with an instant tan! You will no longer need to lie in a tanning bed day after day to get results. Also minor body blemishes look significantly better after a spray tan!
How long does it take to be Spray Tanned?
It takes approximately 5-10 minutes to spray each South Coast Glow client. However, you should allow for 30 minutes per session to properly complete pre and post tanning steps with your technician.
How long should my Spray Tan last?
The average result is 5 to 7 days of color. However factors such as skin type, activities, and maintenance can cause your results to vary. Ask your South Coast Glow tanning expert for more info on how to maintain your tan.
Do I have to be Spray Tanned in the nude?
You do not have to be sprayed in the nude. It is your choice how you want to look. If you want no tan lines then you will want to choose to be sprayed in the nude.
How do I prepare for my Spray Tan?
For the best results, shower and exfoliate the skin beforehand. Ideally you should wax or shave 24 hours before your session. Make sure your skin is free of all lotions, oils, gels or any other products (including foundation if you want your face tanned) that may create a barrier. Additionally apply only a minimal amount of deodorant.
Face and body wipes will be available to remove any remaining barriers.
Select a dark bathing suit or underwear to wear while being sprayed, though you may also opt for a no tan line session and be sprayed in the nude. Most importantly, wear what you feel comfortable in! After your spray tanning session, wear loose dark clothing and sandals for at least 2 hours. Tight fitting clothes and shoes can cause skin friction in the first couple of hours after your spray tan which may affect the outcome of your tan. Any rub-off of the bronzer should easily wash out of most fabrics. Avoid Nylon or Wool as these may absorb the bronzer.
How do I take care of my Spray Tan?
Avoid all contact with water for the first 2 hours. Wait for 6-8 hours before showering (overnight is best). Avoid perspiring (this includes going to the gym) to allow the solution ample time to penetrate your skin.
Once you shower you will see the bronzer wash off (this is normal). When showering, use your palms for lathering in lieu of a loofah or wash cloth. Be careful not to exfoliate the skin when towel-drying. After showering apply ample moisturizer! Hydrated skin has been proven to help extend the life of a sunless tan.
Throughout the duration of your sunless tan, avoid any activities that may cause skin exfoliation. Hot baths and showers will exfoliate your skin. Chlorinated pools and hot tubs will dry your skin and shorten the life of your sunless tan.
Remember…MOISTURIZE…MOISTURIZE…MOISTURIZE!!!
Will you drive to any location?
Yes, we will travel to most Orange County and Los Angeles area locations! Charges may increase depending on the distance.
Is it okay to get a Spray Tan if pregnant or nursing?
Typically, it is safe to spray tan while you are pregnant. The active ingredient Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a three-carbon sugar that is non-toxic and therefore is not known to be harmful to you or your baby. DHA works by interacting with your dead skin cells to produce brown pigment called melanoidin. DHA does not go beyond this layer of cells and is not absorbed into the body. If nursing, we suggest that your breasts not be sprayed. This will ensure there is no ingestion of spray tan to your baby when nursing. Please check with your doctor if you have any concerns before your visit, and ensure that he/she approves.
Can I still go out in the sun or tan in a tanning bed?
Yes, however be very careful not to burn your skin. The spray tan does not protect your skin from the sun, so you should take your regular preventative measures to avoid burning your skin. If you do burn and peel it could make the spray tan look uneven, so be cautious.
